China Yuan Revaluation Prospects Heat Up
LONDON -- China could throw a major surprise into the currency markets this year, as a revaluation of the yuan may be more likely than investors had assumed.
Most economists have given up on China snapping the yuan's peg to the dollar, which has persisted since the middle of 2008, as the emerging economic superpower has repeatedly rejected the idea.
However, the picture has changed somewhat this week, as the Chinese authorities have made it clear that they are determined to tackle early signs of overheating in the economy.
Now, some heavyweight economists are starting to take the idea that currency strength could be a useful tool in that fight more seriously.
Speculation started to gather Tuesday, when the People's Bank of China slapped tougher reserve requirements on its banks to pinch rampant lending, prompting market watchers to mull the chances of a straightforward interest rate rise.
China had already boosted interbank lending rates.
Thursday, the strategy team at Goldman Sachs reacted by saying "we now expect the Chinese authorities to allow the yuan to resume its appreciation path."
The bank, whose views are closely watched by investors, made the new call partly in response to surprisingly upbeat Chinese trade data for December, which showed an 18% rise in exports compared to the same month in 2008.
Goldman Sachs now expects the authorities to unleash a range of measures to tackle inflation, which it sees running at an average rate of 3.5% this year, compared to its more modest expectation of 2.4% earlier. The chances of a revaluation will build further if the steps undertaken so far do not have the desired effect, analysts at French bank BNP Paribas agreed.
Goldman Sachs said it's unsure when the yuan could start climbing, but it expects to see a 5% appreciation in the currency from the current dollar level of CNY6.8270over the next 12 months. Judging from the forwards market, the rest of the market expects a slower 3.2% climb.
Stephen Jen, a currencies investor at hedge fund BlueGold Capital in London, said that with Chinese inflation accelerating, and threatening to breach the PBOC's 2% target, he expects the yuan to be refloated "as early as March or April" -- although that's a view he has held for some time.
A yuan revaluation would likely be China's final option in fighting inflation, not least as it would reward many of the speculators that the authorities have been trying to deflect.
The move would be a major shock to the currencies markets. Policymakers and politicians around the world have been calling for a shift for months, as China's efforts to keep the yuan relatively weak boosts its exports at the expense of those from other countries.
Just this week, incoming European Union trade commissioner Karel De Gucht described an undervalued yuan as "a major problem." Chinese officials are unfazed, however. After De Gucht's remarks, China's foreign ministry spokesman Jiang Yu again defended Beijing's currency policy, saying a stable yuan is important for China and for the world's development.
The likely reaction in the currencies market is tough to predict. Australia's heavy exports to China make the Australian dollar very sensitive to Chinese tightening. Indeed, the so-called Aussie wobbled as China toughened up capital requirements Tuesday.
Other Asian currencies, which are currently lightly managed to prevent them strengthening too far ahead of the yuan, would likely be allowed to climb.
The U.S. dollar could fall if a revaluation removed the need for China to absorb such huge flows of dollars to hold the yuan steady.
More likely, though, as BNP Paribas stressed this week, the dollar would broadly climb as China would have less need to convert its dollar hoard into other currencies. The euro and other major currencies would probably fall as the yuan assumes more of the burden for dollar weakness.
The dollar could also climb if a Chinese revaluation spooked investors and made them nervous about global recovery prospects.

HELPFUL TIPS & SUGGESTIONS POST RV

Investors - Sound Helpful Tips and Suggestions When Our Blessings Come True
1.. Change your number, make sure the new number is unlisted. If you don't, every Tom Dick and Harry will be knocking down your door when they find out about your new circumstances.
2.. Contact your CPA and Tax Attorney that Specializes in Taxes and Complex Trust Accounts.
3.. Set up your Family and Complex Trust(s). If you don't know what a complex trust is... Google it! It's what the rich have... they don't own anything but control everything... just like tycoon Nelson Bunker Hunt. When he died the only thing he had in his name that could be taxed or taken was a 1973 Chevy Pickup Truck. The Government or the IRS cannot touch, tax or take what you do not have or own.
4.. Contact your bank(s) and set up POD accounts.
5.. Do not deal with banks that have derivatives and hedge funds.
6.. Set up CDARS accounts.
7.. Pay off ALL debt.
8.. Fix everything that needs repair.
9.. Upgrade your personal, home, auto and umbrella insurance.
10.. If you are holding a million or millions of dinars.... consider ransom insurance too!
11.. Set aside enough liquid funds for you to survive for at least 90 to 180 days at a clip. This should account for every expense you have on a monthly basis - don't trust any bank during a currency crisis, while more banks will be closing down soon.
12.. Do Not Trust in the US Dollar.... Invest in Precious Metals (like Gold & Silver) Immediately to Safe Guard Your Holdings and to Benefit from its Bull Market we are in right now.
13.. Go to seminars to learn to make more money with your new found money through SMART investments.

CHAZMAN POST - One Dinar
It now appears that the following elements are in place, based on press reports:
1. The parliament has finalized the budget and a vote is expected next week to approve it.
2. The IMF funding is in place.
3. The major oil contracts have been signed and approved.
4. A major security operation has forestalled several planned attacks and rounded up the terrorists that had been in place in Baghdad to disrupt the impending RV.
5. The elections have been scheduled and the blocs are getting ready to launch their campaigns.
Our intel has indicated the following:
1. The IMF (and therefore the US) have signed off on the RV.
2. Shabibi has signed off on the RV and relased it to Maliki.
3. Maliki has approved the RV and handed it back to Shabibi.
4. The US and Iraq have reached an understanding regarding the handling of the security files and the economic files (including the RV).
5. The RV would have the backing of the US, World Bank and IMF.
6. Iraq needs an internationally recognized currency in order to repay the IMF loans and the first installment will be due in March.
7. The studies concerning the value of the IQD that could be supported have been prepared and reviewed.
8. Iraq is in the process of joining the GCC and needs a functional currency to do so.
All of which raises a question: WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR?
Does anyone have a clue about what they could be waiting for? Is it just cold feet? Procrastination? Please - any thought would be appreciated...

My thought is that they have a window of a couple of weeks before this thing really has to RV. So, if they feel they are in a position to continue capturing the bad buys, and cleaning up their government before this thing pops, it's probably in their best interest to continue doing that... Then RV on a much firmer "foundation" as a country and government. I too am hoping for sooner rather than later though. Maybe all is ready for this weekend... We'll see.

The Director of the Office of the WFP in Iraq, Edward Kallon, following the signing, said the partnership is part of the plan administered by Iraq to improve the public distribution system for the citizens and strengthen it. He said the World Food Program through its experience, which extends more than 40 years in providing food assistance at an international level, can play a main role in helping to improve chain supply management for the public distribution system in Iraq. He added that the memorandum of understanding constitutes an important element in poverty reduction strategy and development plan of Iraq, because the work of the United Nations development assistance aims to strengthen the networks of social insurance for the poor, adding that the partnership extends five years, from the current year until the year 2014. The Iraqi Trade Minister Safa al-Din Safi, said the signing of a memorandum of understanding came to achieving the objectives of securing ration card to the fullest in Iraq, and take advantage of the program's experiences in shipping, road transport, storage and monitoring systems and distribution of food, in addition to upgrading the capacity and rehabilitation of provincial for the management of the ration card items of the population, stressing the need for training and technical support required and introduction of modern mechanisms for the procurement of food. In addition, the task of developing Iraq strategy on combating poverty in the agricultural areas and rural areas through the exploitation of human resources in agriculture and projects that are invested in this sector. The Head of the Commission during the meeting which was attended by the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Iraq and a number of consultants and experts preparations for the Iraqi side of the signing of the final common framework for development assistance between the UN and the Government of Iraq in order to get Iraq to support United Nations efforts to the needs and development priorities within the major five-year plan for national development in the country .

I've been asked by a follower to please add my interpretation of Frank's post. I have consulted no one, so this is what I come up with based on what I've heard and read, and what makes sense to me. If you look to the right side of the site, you'll see a couple of headers at the bottom of the green section that will help you set yourself up as a "Follower", and as a "Subscriber" to the site. Just click on the links shown within the sections and you'll be set. Please be careful in your efforts serving our Country, and come home safe!
Just so each of you knows, here are some basic navigation instructions for my blog:
1) The chats, posts, rumors, news articles, and other basic information for a given day are posted in the main section of the blog that has a LIGHT CREAM background. I've set up the site so that it can only post 15 of the latest posts on the page at once.
2) Where do all the other posts go? They are seen on the right side of the page towards the bottom in the BLUE SECTION under the heading "BLOG ARCHIVE". I have all my posts showing by date. If you wish to go back and reference a particular date's posts, you may do so by clicking on the month, date, or day's link.
3) You may also access the varoius links at the top right of the page in the GREEN SECTION. They are hyperlinked for your convenience. Unfortunately, these links don't open a new browser, so you'll have to click the back-arrow in the top left of your browser to get back to the blog, or simply retype the blog URL into the search bar when you wish to return to the blog.
4) It is my intent to post various investment tools and general investment information for the followers after the RV. I've started by posting a couple of articles at the very bottom of the blog page for your convenience. These are very helpful and can give you things to think about moving forward. I will have ALOT more once this thing hits, as I know everyone will want to be exposed to all the possibilities for where you can place your money.
As I am NOT a financial advisor, I will not be recommending anything specific. I will simply educate you on the various investment vehicles and where you could possibly get them. The more of us who can handle our money "Post-RV", the better off the entire world will be.
